Mount Elgon

EASTERN UGANDA

Landscape photography from Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano on the Uganda-Kenya border in eastern Uganda.
Elgon rises to 4,321 metres (14,177 feet) and features one of the largest intact calderas in the world. The mountain supports a series of distinct vegetation zones as altitude increases — from montane forest through bamboo belt to alpine moorland near the summit. Crater lakes sit within the caldera floor.
The series covers the mountain's upper slopes, ridgelines, and the broad views across the surrounding lowlands of eastern Uganda. The climate is notably cooler than the plains below, and cloud cover is frequent, producing soft and variable light conditions.
