SIMANJIRO DISTRICT, TANZANIA

Photography commissioned by The Earthshot Prize for their Africa Innovates portfolio, documenting the work of the Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT) in Simanjiro District, northern Tanzania.

UCRT is a Tanzanian NGO that works with indigenous pastoralist, agropastoral, and hunter-gatherer communities to secure communal land rights and sustainable natural resource management. To date, the organisation has helped protect over 1.7 million hectares of connected communal land beyond and between Tanzania's protected areas — territory that sustains traditional livelihoods and functions as critical wildlife corridor.

The assignment covered UCRT's field operations, community engagement, and the landscapes and people at the centre of their land rights work. UCRT is a Goldman Environmental Prize laureate, an Ashden Award winner, and an Earthshot Prize portfolio innovator.
