Journey to Sefar

TASSILI N'AJJER, ALGERIA

Photography from a seven-day guided trek through Tassili n'Ajjer to the rock city of Sefar, in southeastern Algeria. October 2025. Tassili n'Ajjer is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a vast sandstone plateau in the central Sahara, known for its eroded rock formations and one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric cave art in the world.

Sefar, a labyrinth of towering stone corridors deep within the plateau, contains thousands of Neolithic paintings dating back as far as 10,000 years.

The series covers the desert landscape, rock formations shaped by wind erosion over millennia, cave paintings encountered along the route, and night sky photography from camp. The terrain is physically demanding — the plateau sits above 1,400 metres and the route passes through narrow stone corridors, open sand, and exposed ridge with no established trails in places.
It is one of the least visited UNESCO sites in Africa. Access requires a local guide and multi-day trekking commitment.
