Ankole Cattle

KIRUHURA, WESTERN UGANDA

A photographic series on Ankole long-horned cattle in the rangelands of Kiruhura district, western Uganda.
Ankole cattle are one of the most visually distinctive livestock breeds in East Africa, characterised by their large, sweeping horns. They are central to the pastoral economy and cultural life of the Bahima and Banyankole communities of the region — valued not only for milk production but as markers of wealth and social standing.
The images document the cattle in open grazing land, focusing on herd structure, horn variation, and the interaction between the animals and the landscape they move through.
