The Nile Rapids

RIVER NILE, UGANDA

Photographs of the white-water rapids on the Victoria Nile near Jinja, eastern Uganda.
This stretch of the Nile has been a site of navigation and commerce for centuries, and today draws rafters, kayakers, and water sports operators from across the world. The rapids run through a landscape of dense riverbank vegetation and exposed rock formations, producing some of the most powerful commercially rafted white water in Africa.
The series documents both the force of the river itself and the human activity around it — an intersection of natural geography and the adventure tourism industry that has grown up along this section of the Nile.
