Alliance for Resilient Coffee

VARIOUS DISTRICTS, UGANDA

Photography and visual documentation for the Alliance for Resilient Coffee (ARC), a USAID-funded initiative addressing the impact of climate change on global coffee supply chains.
Over four years, ARC developed tools and training programs — including country profiles, landscape assessments, and a climate vulnerability tool — to help smallholder coffee farmers adopt climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The project operated in Uganda, Guatemala, and Honduras, reaching over 6,530 smallholder families, including 2,100 women and 750 youth.
The consortium was led by Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) alongside Sustainable Food Lab, World Coffee Research, CIAT, IITA, Conservation International, and Root Capital, as part of the U.S. Government's Feed the Future food security initiative.
Results included CSA implementation across 4,650+ hectares of farmland, 441 demonstration plots, and 24 on-farm technology trials. In Uganda, adoption rates for integrated pest and disease management rose from 48% to 90%, erosion control from 3% to 57%, and rainwater harvesting from 3% to 41%.
The project concluded in September 2020. Outcomes continue to inform partner-led initiatives across coffee-growing regions worldwide.
