Stone Town: Architecture and Coastline
ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA
Architectural and street photography from Stone Town, Zanzibar โ a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the western coast of Unguja island.
The built environment of Stone Town reflects centuries of overlapping influence: Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European elements are visible in the carved wooden balconies, decorative latticework, and dense alleyway layouts. The photographs document both the architectural fabric โ facades, arched passages, coral stone walls โ and the coastal edge of the town, including traditional dhow boats and the Indian Ocean waterfront.
Many of the structures in the frame have been subject to ongoing conservation and restoration work, adding a layer of contemporary intervention to the historical built form.
